Registration for the Conference is now Open:

However, due to a number of enquiries from interested parties we are now opening the conference registration. Attendance at the conference is free. There is a conference dinner (venue TBC) and delegates will have to pay for the meal and drinks at the dinner on the night. Extended Deadline

As an (inter)discipline bioethics has always represented an engagement between the academy’s ‘two cultures’ as well as an attempt to bring the ethical issues raised by bioscience and healthcare to the attention of a wider audience, including that of the general public. Continuing the theme of self-reflection that has been a mark of previous conferences in this series we seek papers which represent the current diversity of bioethics and raise questions regarding the engagement of bioethical research at various levels. Empirical methods are becoming more central to the discipline; the influence of various humanities can be felt in bioethical research and in the classroom; the cultural location of bioethical and medical practices are becoming clearer; and an understanding of bioethical and medical ethical history is beginning to emerge. How does such a diverse body of research achieve a sense of unity amongst its own practitioners and engage with various interest groups and publics? Furthermore bioethics must ensure that it is open to engagement by those interest groups and the public in a dialectic fashion rather than adopting a didactic role. Topics for papers may include but are not limited too:
The media and the public face of bioethics.
Applied ethics as public philosophy
The Arts and Bioethics.
The challenge of interdisciplinarity and the languages of (bio)ethics.
The history of medical, healthcare and bio- ethics and the institutions of healthcare.
Humanities in the healthcare ethics classroom.
Researching Ethical Healthcare Practice.
Moral Leadership and the Healthcare Institution.
Communicating new approaches to Bioethics
From academic research to the professionals classroom.
The new professionalism, interprofessionalism, and ethics.
Bioethics, the 3rd sector and the interest group.
Proposals for papers not more than 350 words are invited. Submission is by email only and by the deadline is Monday the 11th of May 2009. Please email word attachements to postgrad.bioethics.conf.2009@gmail.com. Papers given at the conference will be considered for publication in Bioethics.

Conference Theme: Engaging Bioethics/ Bioethical Engagements.
Bioethics has always represented an engagement between the academy’s ‘two cultures’ as well as an attempt to bring the ethical issues raised by bioscience and healthcare to the attention of a wider audience, including that of the general public. Continuing the theme of self-reflection that has been a mark of previous conferences in this series the conference aims to represent the current diversity of bioethical scholarship at the postgraduate level and raise questions regarding the engagement of bioethical research and its various publics.
The conference will be postgraduate led. We hope to have at least four panels each containing three postgraduate papers.
Guest Speakers:
We are very please that Dr Margret Shildrick (QUB) and Prof Andy Miah (UWS) have agreed to give plenary talks.
Dr Shildrick is a world leading academic who writes on ‘The Body’ from a broadly post-structuralist/ feminist perspectives. Her publications include: Leaky Bodies and Boundaries: Feminism, Postmodernism and (Bio)ethics (1997), Embodying the Monster: Encounters with the Vulnerable Self (2001), Ethics of the Body: Postconventional Challenges (with Roxanne Mykitiuk, 2005) and Dangerous Discourses of Disability, Subjectivity and Sexuality (2009). Dr Shilddrick will present a discussion of the film Naked on the Inside and the ways in which it can approached for the purposes of public engagement and pedagogic activity.
Prof. Miah was recently appointed to a chair in the Dept of Media, Cultrure and Journalism at UWS. His publications include Genetically Modified Athletes: Biomedical Ethics, Gene Doping, & Sport, (2004), The Medicalization of Cyberspace. (with Emma Rich, 2008) and Human Futures: Art in an Age of Uncertainty (2008). Prof. Miah will be presenting a talk on ‘Bioart as Bioethics’, a major area of his research.
UK and Ireland Postgraduate Bioethics Network.
The conference will be the venue for a discussion of the creation of a UK and Ireland postgraduate Bioethics network. Many postgraduate bioethicists are members of large interdisciplinary centres in various HEI’s although many are not. Whatever the location and intellectual surroundings of postgraduate bioethicists we feel that the time has come to take advantage of the Web2.0 and create a viable postgraduate network. The only established aim of the network is currently the annual conference. All other aims, objectives and activities of the conference are open for suggestion and discussion by UK and Ireland postgraduate researchers. We would appreciate your thoughts in advance of the conference (whether or not you are able to attend) in order that a agenda can be drawn up. We are very fortunate in that the session devoted to discussion of the postgraduate bioethics network will be facilitated by Louise O’Meara from the Interaction Institute for Social Change. Louise is a professional facilitator who has delivered training on leadership, teambuilding and network building to a variety of business and political settings. We are very grateful to her for donating her time.

The Third Annual Postgraduate Conference in Bioethics was held at the University of Manchester on the 30th of June and the 1sdt of July 2008. The conference was sponsored by the School of Law, University of Manchester, the

The Second Annual Postgraduate Bioethics Conference:

The Second Postgraduate Conference in Bioethics was held at King’s College, Cambridge on the 30th and 31st of July 2007. Funded by the Wellcome Trust, King’s College and the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Science and Humanities (CRASSH), University of Cambridge the conference aimed to bring together postgraduate researchers from different disciplines, including the humanities, and the social, natural and medical sciences, to explore the bioethical foundations and implications of their research.
Organising Committee Mikey Dunn (Department of Psychiatry) Zeynep Gurtin-Broadbent (Centre for Family Research) Jonathan Ives (Centre for Biomedical Ethics, University of Birmingham) and Jessica Wheeler (Department of Psychiatry). The organising committee wrote a geust editorial in Clinical Ethics Vol.3.No.4. Dec. 2008.

First Annual Postgraduate Bioethics Conference.

The first Postgraduate Conference in Bioethics was held at the University of Birmingham on the 23rd and 24th of June 2006. Funded by the Wellcome Trust the conference aimed to:
- Bring together post-graduate researchers working in bioethics and related disciplines.
- Provide a platform for postgraduate bioethicists to present their research.
- Facilitate discussion on future directions in the field of bioethics.A selection of the papers delivered at this conference were published in Healthcare Analysis Vol.6. No. 1. March 2008. Details are here.
The conference co-ordinators and the editors of the special edition of Healthcare Analysis were: Jonathan Ives, Emma Baldock, Adelé Langlois, and Anna Smajdor
